Online Social Networking 101: How Internet Marketers Should Use Social Media Sites

<< Advertising & Marketing  Critical Comments Required On this website? >>

Social media in the form of free social networks and online bookmarking have grown in popularity in the last five years. It can be hard, however, to know which to choose because there are so many of them. That’s why so many Internet users find reviews of these type of sites so helpful. When you read the reviews, though, you might be shocked at how people’s opinions vary widely. Some might fight for their particular choices tooth and claw. That might be because they were ignorant of the options, so they invested all their time without further investigation. Some people fight for their choice without even knowing the differences between business networking sites, bookmarking sites or sites that feature social networking as a means for people to have fun, date, play games or do various other entertainment-related activities. Many people don’t know that there also are online social media sites, like Yuwie, that pay for people to use and promote them.

People often don’t know the distinction between one form of free social network and another because there is a tremendous amount of cross-over in the platforms. For example, Facebook can be used for business or pleasure. Thousands of user-created free Ning networking communities have sprung up all over the Internet, such as Vintage Life Network. These social network sites are important because they’re created by users and focus on distinct interests. Interests can be as specific as book aficionados, who now have many online communities geared just to them. Online social network sites like LibraryThing have everything from chats, book reviews and online bookshelves. An innovative variant of online social networking sites is social bookmarking, because it opens up new worlds of information storage and retrieval. Sites that feature social bookmarking, such as del.icio.us, allow logged-in users to save their online bookmarks for free. Social bookmarking sites also are a great help to Web searchers, because tags that allow for easy searching can be assigned to each bookmark. The ability to use keyword tagging also is of value to Web marketers, because they know they will lead to backlinks for their sites. The individual links aren’t that valuable but when there are many of them, search traffic often increases. As with BloggingZoom, when a link is posted on these web properties, it can often achieve high search engine rankings if the keywords were researched and the listing was entered properly.

The boundaries are made even more murky with sites like Mixx, which allow online social networking and social bookmarking. They are used for bookmarking but also are equally great for marketing and socializing. Many new business contacts and friends are just waiting to be found on these platforms and as a bonus, material placed on them oftentimes ranks well in Google. This makes these type of sites genuine gold to Internet marketers.
